n 1911, only those who were "over 21, literate and head of the family". In this way, the doctor Carolina Beatriz Ângelo got her right to vote, as she was a widow and supported her children with her job of surgery, consequently with the right to be considered "head" of her family. After this episode and in order to prevent this from being repeated, the law was amended in 1913, with the specification that only male heads of households could vote. The right to vote, without being tied to family leadership or years of study, only occurred in Portugal in 1974.
