After Mandarin, English, Spanish and Arabic, Portuguese is the fifth most spoken language in the world, with around 273 million speakers spread across the four corners of the world. These countries are Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique and São Tomé and Princípe, on the African continent, Brazil, in South America, and Timor-Leste on the Asian continent. There are still communities in many parts of the world that, although not official, speak our language. There is no doubt that Portuguese voyages and maritime explorations have widened the horizon of the country and the world.
