Thinking, thinking died the ... ?!
21 of July of 2020
The use of expressions to characterize a moment is notorious in the Portuguese language. For example, making a decision can be “a beast with seven heads”. Did you know that we make over 35,000 decisions a day? As human beings, we always want to “hit the mouche”, but as the old saying goes “of thinking died a donkey”.
Whenever it takes a long time to make a decision, the expression “of thinking died a donkey” is heard. This famous expression arose from the description of one of the characteristics of the human being: Indecision.
Indecision is the difficulty of deciding, hesitating in a decision. To better explain this characteristic, Jean Buridan illustrated indecision by placing a donkey between two cups, one with water and the other with oats. As the donkey could not decide whether it was hungry or thirsty, it ended up dying with the cups in front of its snout. Sometimes it takes so long to make a decision that we miss the moment and the opportunity.
Speaking of donkeys, another Portuguese expression that comes to mind is "The color of a donkey when it runs away."
But does the donkey really change color?
The expression “color of donkey when it’s fleeing” designates a color that is difficult to define. But why? The donkey, a calm animal, when it gets angry is uncontrollable and it is better not to be around when that happens. If you're around, then it's best to run!
Over the years, and with the passing of the word of mouth, the "run" of the verb to run has changed color. The expression “the run of a donkey when it flees” has become the expression we use today.
However, another version of the story claims that the origin is in the word "burrus" which, in Latin, means "ruço/blond" or "reddish". Swapping for kids, the word donkey could even refer to a color. This color was related to anger or drinking.
Not making decisions is not a good decision. It is important to think and evaluate the situations, but we also cannot spend our lives in indecision or the water dries and the oats will get bugs.
And you, are you indecisive on a daily basis?
If you are, we help you decide: the best t-shirt for you is the donkey! And don't forget that a donkey died thinking. Buy your t-shirt here.
