The best we have
27 of April of 2021
"Mother dear, Mother dear. The best we have." It is already next Sunday that Mother's Day is celebrated.
Mother's Day is a day intended for all mothers, it is a day that carries a special strength with the intention of honoring motherhood. This day is linked to the celebration of the beginning of spring, which was already celebrated in mythology through the most diverse cults, as it takes us back to antiquity where in ancient Rome Cybele, the Mother Goddess, mother of all living beings, was honored, and in classical Greece the tribute was dedicated to Reia, a Goddess related to fertility, mother of all the Greek gods.
However, the United States of America was the first country to make "Mother's Day" official, where Ann Jarvis, a woman who wanted the commitment of mothers to be recognized, developed working associations for mothers to combat the high infant mortality rates in the 1858s. Ann, after losing her mother in the Civil War, decided to honor her, with the goal of dedicating the day to all mothers, to strengthen family ties and respect for parents both in life and after they pass away. A transversal day that is celebrated all over the world.
In Portugal, this date started to be celebrated in the 1950's, when the Portuguese Feminine Youth wanted to institute the Mother's Day, being celebrated on December 8th, the day of the Immaculate Conception. However, in the Catholic Church, at the request of the bishops, this day started to be celebrated at the end of May and later moved to the first Sunday in May, Mary's month. This date still prevails today
Being the Portuguese a very nostalgic people, very attached to their roots and family, this is a day with a lot of impact and many are the tributes made throughout the ages to mothers and maternal ties.
Proof of this was in 1994 when several Portuguese musicians such as Tony Carreira, Ágata, Romana, Luís Filipe Reis, Valentina Torres, among others got together to sing the song "Mãe Querida". A theme that we still know how to sing today and that easily sticks in our ears.
"Mother dear, Mother dear
The best we have
There's no other love in life
Like a mother's love".
We also have the poem by Matilde Rosa Araújo, which was often recited at school parties dedicated to Mother's Day.
"Mother!
What a beautiful truth
Birth contains:
I was born of you,
Like the flower of the earth".
A mother is the person who loves and cares for her children, whether or not they are biological. It can be a grandmother, an aunt, an adoptive mother, or a father. And these tributes are meant to acknowledge all the support that "mothers" have given us, in good times and bad. A friendly shoulder, a lap of comfort, and all the teachings they give us.
We thank Marco Henriques and his mother Ilda Henriques, from the União Operária e Cultural Filarmónica Nª Sª dos Remédios de Fajãzinha in the Azores, who through the musical arrangement by Inês Ferreira, from the Filarmónica de São Tiago de Marrazes, play together in a universal language "Para os braços da minha mãe" by Pedro Abrunhosa. A song dedicated to all those who play the role of "mother", thus creating fundamental roots in each child.
Do as we do and declare yourself through music to who is your maternal pillar.
