The Lusitanians are seen as the ancestors of the Portuguese. They were a Celtiberic people who lived in the western part of the Iberian Peninsula. At first, a single tribe that lived between the Douro and Tagus rivers. North of the Douro River they were bordered by the Galaicos and Astures in the Roman province of Galécia, to the south by the Béticos, and to the west by the Celtiberos in the more central area of Hispania Tarraconensis.
